An Evaluation of Jepanese B Encephalitis Patients Following One Year

Abstract
Author observed the one year follow-up studies on 41 cases of Japanese B encephalitis who had been admitted to Pusan National University Hospital and the Isolation Ward of Pusan City Hospital during past 4 months from July to October 1966.
They were evaluated by checking physical conditions and neurological examinations including the Bender-Gestalt test The results obtained were as follows:
1. Among the total cases of 41, 24 were boys, 17 were girls and the age distribution of majority of cases were between 5 and 12 years of age.
2. Two third of total patients had recovered consciousness within 10 days from the onset of illness and they were also able to eat, speak and get voluntary movement along this period
3. Neurological examination showed abnormality in 7 uses, on the other hand 13 cases were definitely abnormal in psychiatric evaluation.
4. 7 cases had been suffered f -om transient sequelae e,g. agitation, disorientation eta, for 1 to 4 months after discharge but they recovered completely from that sequelae thereafter.
5. Remaining neurological abnormalities gave the impression to improve slowly but progressively but the psychiatric abnormalities fixed and it would not show further improvement.
6. 34 cases who were cooperative were performed B-G test and 18cases (53 %) of them were shown cerebral dysfunction definitely. According to the test, cerebral dysfunction presented predominantly in lower age group and the degree were also more severe in this age group.
7. In comparison between the duration of disturbed consciousness, neuropsychiatric abnormalities and the result of the B-G test, they showed no definite interrelationship but there noted some tendency of association of psychiatric abnormality and the result of the B-G test
8. In conclusion, still remaining sequelae neurologically, psychiatrically and on the B-G test were 21 cases among the total follow up cases of 41.
